Update from SA!

Hello again! We’ve been pretty busy lately with projects and with getting ready for Nick & Austin to leave. Today’s the day that they’re headed off back to the States. Bummer, but I’m so glad the girls and I still have 2 and a half weeks left! It’s crazy how fast the time has gone by, but still feeling like I’ve been here forever. When I reflect on my time here so far, I can’t even believe it’s only been 3 weeks. We’ve done so much, seen so many places, met a ton of people, and learned a lot about what it’s like here in South Africa. It has truly been a blessing so far to interact and start growing relationships with the people in and around Ocean View. This past week, we have worked a lot on our projects we’re doing while we’re here. These include: updates on the Ubuntu boys, player profiles about a few of the Ubuntu boys, researching tutoring programs to potentially start one in OV, helping Chevonne with youth events at OV Methodist, and planning some of our own events for the youth. So far, we’ve been really successful in our research on tutoring programs and such. We’ve interviewed four of the Ubuntu boys for their player profiles and we’ll start writing their biographies soon. This week, we made flyers for the youth family movie night at the church and we’ve planned a whole girls’ day on Saturday for the youth girls. We’re super pumped about that! The main focus of the girls’ day will be to teach them about their worth and about having a relationship with God. These girls don’t get encouraged as often as they should and they aren’t shown very much attention. On Saturday, the whole day will be dedicated to them and to helping them understand how beautiful they are and how much God loves them. Katie has planned most of the day with structured talks, activities, and gifts for the girls. Other than this, we are just continuing our work on projects for Sarah & Casey. As for me, I’m getting a tiny bit homesick but I’m still enjoying South Africa and am nowhere near ready to actually go home! I’m excited to see what God has in store for the second half of this trip!

Love & God bless,
Amanda Maddox
